Zaha Hadid Architects’ skyscrapers to contribute to the regeneration of Vauxhall

Zaha Hadid Architects have submitted plans for two sky-high towers at Vauxhall Cross, a project that could possibly be the firm’s first mixed-use project in London. Vauxhall Cross is a key regeneration spot within the wider regeneration zone of Nine Elms with the new US embassy recently opened. According to the plans, the skyscrapers will be connected by a ten storey podium and create an advanced mixed-used space of offices, retail, hotels and housing. The proposed podium will occupy the middle of Vauxhall Gyratory, a significantly unexploited part of the Vauxhall Cross Island.

The architecture firm asserts that the redevelopment will bring 2,000 jobs and 260 new homes to the area however the design of the towers has split the locals.

Renders show the two rectilinear towers rising from the fluted podium, with soaring floor-to-ceiling glazing in between a grid of oblong arches and indents to accommodate for outdoor terraces.

The Southbank regeneration area has specifically allowed the proliferation of tall buildings along the western stretch of the River Thames as part of the wider aim to become London’s most desired prime address. Despite the local debate, Zaha Hadid Architects affirm that its proposal fulfils the regeneration brief and will only add value to Vauxhall.

“The design responds to Lambeth Council’s aspirations for a district centre for Vauxhall by creating a vibrant new public square adjacent to the busy rail, underground and bus interchange,” ZHA said in a statement.
