Unique nature experiences easily accessible from Miami
Miami is known for the sun, its culture and general liveliness all year round. Now, if you’re like many and prefer nature to city life, Miami can still offer you that, with three major US national parks surrounding the city within an hour drive of Downtown Miami.
Biscayne National Park
Technically, Miami sits on Biscayne Bay, not the Atlantic Ocean. But Biscayne National Park is special as it forms part of the Florida Reef – the sixth largest coral reef in the world. You can take a boat tour around the bay, a popular activity, and enjoy the tropical breezes.
For a closer encounter, many in Miami go scuba diving, exploring the beautiful coral reefs and hoping for up-close experiences with bottlenose dolphins, manatees and a variety of sea turtles. And for those who like history, several famous shipwrecks can be explored in the bay as well.
Everglades National Park
If Miami is defined by Biscayne Bay on the east, it’s framed by the world-famous Florida Everglades in the west and south. Known as a ‘River of Grass’, this national park of marshlands and rivers covers over 1.5 million acres and is the US’ third largest nature preserve.
There are boat tours and walking trails and lots of activities and wildlife to see, like alligators, manatees and one of the world’s largest breeding ground for tropical wading birds. Being so far away from civilization, the Everglades are one of the few accessible places in the US to see a full night of stars in the sky at night.
Big Cypress National Preserve
A bit further afield from Miami, Big Cypress was originally going to be part of Everglades National Park. Unlike the Everglades, Big Cypress is mostly forest and hosts a different variety of plants and animals, including white-tailed deer, the Florida panther, and alligators.
And as a preserve as opposed to a park, those who enjoy fishing and hunting. It’s also one of the few places where you can explore the park on an off-road vehicle.
