New Nine Elms bridge will stun with graceful simplicity
Miami is trying to steal the show for a unique use of a derelict space from New York City, with the ‘Underline.’
Taking the inspiration from NYC’s High Line and hiring the same design firm to do it, Miami’s new public space will transform 10 miles of land underneath the Miami MetroRail (elevated subway) line from Downtown Miami to Dadeland in the south into a series of public ‘living rooms’ connected by a wide pedestrian path and cycling trail.
James Corner Field Operation has been hired to complete a master plan of the Underline as well as design the first half-mile of the new parkway from the Miami River to Coral Street through the downtown neighbourhood of Brickell.
If that firm sounds familiar, you would be correct. JCFO was the architecture firm that designed the award-winning High Line that has inspired cities across the world to re-imagine the uses under active infrastructure that hasn’t traditionally been inspiring.
JCFO is also behind the magnificent Battersea Roof Gardens that will be built on top of the Norman + Fosters Partners building in the Battersea Power Station redevelopment.
This first section of the corridor, Brickell Backyard will start construction next month and will be a boom for current and future residents. It’s expected that this phase will include: a dog-friendly park on the Miami River, an outdoor gym space complete with an outdoor running track and workout stations, butterfly gardens, and a grand, three-block Promenade with a performance venue at one end, board game tables in the middle and a 50-foot long communal dining table.
Future phases and the rest of the park will include consistent lighting, fancy water bottle refill machines, amenity kiosks, shops, and even bridges over busy intersections.
Projects like the Underline and High Line attract investment and make an area more desirable. The group behind the Underline has an entire strategy dedicated to creating real estate potential and profit for local businesses and investors including potential new grants and fundings, and allowing more development along the corridor.
Properties like the Aston Martin Residences, within half a mile from the end of the Underline, are expected to rise by five per cent in value just by being in proximity to the new park, making buying property by the new park a great return in investment.
