New London Centre for music revealed
A beautiful pyramid of wood and glass could soon rise in central London. The city’s famed Barbican district could break free of its brutalist bounds with the new Centre for Music.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro, which has designed the Victoria and Albert’s new museum in Stratford and the MoMa expansion in New York City, unveiled the new structure for London a few weeks ago.
The Museum of London, which is planning a move from the estates to West Smithfield, will leave a vacant site for a new cultural venue in the City of London’s Culture Mile.
The Centre for Music will be a state-of-the-art performance concert hall, with a variety of rehearsal spaces. This venue will be the new home for groups like the Barbican, London Symphony Orchestra, and Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and is estimated to cost over £288 million.
Elizabeth Diller, one of the founding partners and recently called the world’s most influential architects, is one of the leads on this project, designing a new public building that invites public use both inside and outside of the building.
The Centre for Music will feature spaces built from wood, a new trend in performance halls. Depending on the type of wood used, it can create the perfect acoustic effect, with sound reverberating evenly to the audience, no matter where they sit.
Between Fotografiska, V&A East, and Battersea Power Station, the new Centre for Music in central London will add even more global culture power to one of the most musical cities in the world.
