Dubai’s aviation vision takes off
Dubai’s aviation vision is growing in prestige since new projects are set to bring ground-breaking changes to the industry. Under the umbrella of the Dubai 10X initiative, Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP) has introduced upcoming projects that will place Dubai at the centre of aviation innovation.
In less than 365 days, a panel of experts reviewed more than 160 ideas from which 26 initiatives were approved by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF).
The ‘Retractable Aircraft Cabin’ is an upcoming project that aims to re-shape the flying experience for passengers. It will enable airlines to re-distribute their capacity on demand for each flight in record time while the aircraft is still on the airport floor. Travelers will be given a number of options for customized airplane cabins on demand for entertainment and business.
Khalifa Suhail Al Zaffin, Executive Chairman of Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects noted: “The advent of new travel technologies such as supersonic aircraft and space travel have raised questions about the ability of existing airports to accommodate these modes of travel in an integrated way. As the most ambitious country in the field of exploratory space missions, we believe the time is right to develop a new comprehensive plan for an integrated airport that offers both air and space travel.”
Al Zaffin underlined the importance of the Dubai 10X to pioneer change and stimulate opportunities for innovation.
Looking into the future, Al Maktoum Airport will also be reinvented as an aviation hub that can handle air and space travel. The ‘multi-mode super-port’, as the proposal indicates, will host subsonic, supersonic, hypersonic, and even space planes. Increasing the capacity of Dubai’s second airport to accommodate advanced aviation transport will ultimately respond to the growing demand for commercial space travel in the future. The hub will be known as ‘cosmotropolis’ and will be the region’s first spaceport.
