Dubai is set to become an international hub for cruising tourism
Known for its endless captivating desert, Dubai is now setting sail for the seas. Expanding towards every direction possible, the Emirate is set to become an international hub for cruise tourism.
As indicated by Cruise Arabia and Africa, the number of cruise passengers has seen a 95% growth rate, soaring up from 320,000 in the 2013/2014 cruise season, to 625,000 in 2016/2017.
Hamdan bin Mohammed Cruise Terminal at Mina Rashid is the key to this growth since it is set to become the largest terminal in the world, capable of handling 18,000 passengers a day. As cruise tourism reaches new levels of popularity, this is one of the fastest-growing segments of Dubai’s tourism industry.
As the Emirate has earned a top spot among the world’s leading winter cruise destinations, a new cruise season is upon the UAE. It is expected that 725,000 cruise tourists and 825,000 cruise tourists will disembark in Dubai in the 2019-2020 season.
Through intensified work and infrastructure upgrades, the government aims to deliver a seamless experience to tourists and cruise ship companies. The ultimate goal is to have 10 cruise ships based at the port in Dubai, which will automatically mean increasing the capacity by three, as now the capacity is at seven mega cruise ships at the same time.
Attracted by Dubai’s unusually warm weather all year long and perfect hospitality services, it is mostly western Europeans flocking to the city.
By the end of 2021, Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) aims to attract one million tourists mainly from China, India, Spain, Portugal, and Russia.
Hamad bin Mejren, senior vice-president of Dubai Tourism, described cruise tourism as a key industry for the Gulf region. ”With year-round sunshine, an ever-evolving must-visit destination proposition, and a winter homeport for multiple international cruise lines operating regular international itineraries out of the city, Dubai is perfectly placed for its cruise tourism offering to become a major global attraction,” he predicted.
