Dubai Expo 2020 ready to launch in two years
Already one of the world’s biggest tourist destinations, Dubai is getting ready to welcome everyone to one of the largest and most innovative events: the 2020 World Expo.
Dubai won the right to host the Expo in 2013, beating out Izmir (Turkey), Sao Paulo (Brazil), and Yekaterinburg (Russia). The Expo 2020 theme is “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”, with sub-themes of Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability.
While two years may seem like a long time, countries and companies have already started to unveil their dazzling designs to impress and show off their knowledge on October 20, 2020.
Opportunity
One of three pavilions representing the unifying theme of Expo 2020, the Opportunity Pavillion (shown above) will showcase local building materials and resources, with the hopes of showing how we can build sustainable structures in the future. The structure, made with locally mined stone and ropes, will evoke the shape of a desert dune.
United Kingdom
Es Devlin OBE was chosen to showcase the United Kingdom’s expertise in artificial intelligence. The designer’s work is most famously recognized for the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Summer Olympics and the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics.
United Arab Emirates
The pavilion representing the United Arab Emirates is being designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, who is also designing the world’s tallest tower, the Dubai Creek Tower. The building will resemble a falcon in flight, a bird that is important to Emirati history, culture, and identity.
Mobility
The Mobility Hub will showcase the biggest innovations in transportation. London’s Foster + Partners have been chosen to build this pavilion, after working in transportation architecture around the world. The firm is designing apartments in the anticipated third phase of the Battersea Power Station redevelopment.
The 2020 World Expo in Dubai has hit off another boom in building, from new shopping malls, office parks, hotels, and residences. The state has become focused on promoting mixed-use and industrial estates that will lead the city to become a major power in knowledge production, far surpassing traditional centres of education.
