Dubai emerges as the new outpost for cutting-edge architecture
A selection of the top architecture firms, soaring skyscrapers, and a world-record have turned Dubai into an outpost for advanced architecture and design excellence.
Forty years ago, the Dubai World Trade Center was just approaching completion. Nowadays, we can barely see its 39 storeys, as they are overshadowed by other world-renowned buildings, marking Dubai’s growth.
The Emirate, driven by its desire for the superlatives, always evolves to include more awe-inspiring projects.
On a recent feature story, CNN discusses with Skidmore Owings & Merrill (SOM), one of the companies responsible for the Emirate’s unparalleled design ingenuity.
“In nature things progress through evolution. But in architecture you can create a new species out of nothing,” says William Baker, structural engineering partner at Skidmore Owings & Merrill (SOM). The company views Burj Khalifa, as this new creature they invented.
Burj Khalifa, the tallest man-made building on Earth, celebrated in April its 10th anniversary reaching the soaring 160th floor. Originally opened in 2010, Burj Khalifa has been a staple of Dubai’s rapid growth and prosperity, while hosting many other records.
Perfectly embodying a construction marvel, Burj Khalifa combines system innovation and material upgrade, wrapped up in a $1.5 billion project.
Motivated by the design potential Dubai offers, many of the world’s leading designers have opened new offices in Dubai in search of a placemaking project that will put their name down in design history forever.
Grimshaw has a new office in Dubai and a flagship project on the horizon in Dubai’s Expo Sustainability Pavilion, embodying one of the event’s three core themes and a civic institute that will remain after the event closes in 2021.
Foster + Partners has also won a commission for the Mobility Pavilion at Expo 2020 while working on a much anticipated creative hub as part of the Dubai Design District.
However, Dubai’s bold and beautiful design story doesn’t end here as the city emerges as a destination of immersive architecture and innovative design.
Architecture offices such as Zaha Hadid Architects, Calatrava, and UN studio with its 300-meter-high ceramic-tile facade “breathing” skyscraper, will push the boundaries of design even further to create unique concepts for the world to admire.
Just like designers and architects, individuals who relocate to Dubai aspire to leave their mark there or start from scratch, as the Emirate still preserves the allure of the desert as this white canvas of new chances and thrilling possibilities. Professionals who are looking for an attractive career, passionate individuals who strive for greatness or families in search for the highest quality of life and services, relocate to Dubai every day.
