DEWA upgrades Al Marmoom reserve to eco-tourist hotspot
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) recently completed the electrical connections and installation of smart meters at four projects, an electric vehicle charging station, and a Manarati smart pole at the Al Marmoom Reserve in the emirate.
The Al Marmoom Reserve, a project originally inaugurated by the Ruler of Dubai in January 2018, is of high ecological and environmental importance but also a tourist attraction. As UAE’s first unfenced desert conservation reserve, the project provides a natural reserve for plants, animals, as well as local and migratory birds.
While attracting one million visitors annually, the Al Marmoom Reserve will be turned into an eco-tourism hotspot with the new amendments by DEWA. In a string of 6 projects, DEWA is aiming to create an eco-sustainable paradise through clean energy supply, solar panels, and electric vehicle charging stations.
‘We are pleased to participate in this plan through projects that support sustainable development in its economic, environmental, and social aspects, supporting the objectives of the UAE Centennial 2071, and contributing to making the UAE one of the best countries in the world,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA.
The first project will supply the reserve with clean energy from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park while the second project will involve the installation of solar panels on every building rooftop at the reserve, connecting them to DEWA’s grid.
To promote electric vehicles and reduce harmful emissions, charging stations will be installed as part of the third project, lead by DEWA. Plus, the installation of Manarati smart poles with innovative applications including charging electric vehicles, interactive screens, smart environmental sensors, and Internet access is another project by DEWA. The Al Marmoom Reserve is also set to host the largest single-site solar project in the world with a total planned capacity of 5,000MW by 2030, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.
