A day trip from Dubai: Hatta
Traditionally, wealthier citizens of Dubai went to the exclave of Hatta, in the Hajar Mountains, to escape oppressively hot summers. Only an hour and a half away from Downtown Dubai, Hatta offers history and relaxing activities if you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
Hatta heritage village
In this attraction, visitors can learn about the history of those who lived in the Hajar Mountain, with a life-sized recreation of a traditional mountain village. 30 buildings of various shapes, sizes, and uses, including a mosque and a fort, are present. Built with materials found in the region, such as palm tree fronds, stone, and reeds, the village offers a glimpse at the culture of emiratis who lived in this mountainous region.
Hatta dam
The Hatta Dam, built in the 1990s to provide power and water for the region, has created a beautiful, serene lake in the middle of the mountains, allowing picturesque views, beautiful picnics and leisure activities to flourish. The most popular sports are kayaking and paddle boating, which thanks to the isolated location, is much more calm and peaceful than trying to kayak off the coast of Dubai in the Arabian Gulf.
Hatta hill park
Near the Heritage Village, Hatta Hill Park is located closer to the town and is flush with greenery. The location is popular with families looking to host a barbecue or picnic. For those looking for the perfect Instagram shot of the surrounding mountain range, head up to the top of the viewing tower for one of the best vantage points in the region.
